RMT Sports Massage
Sports massage is a specialized form of massage therapy designed for athletes, physically active individuals, and those engaged in regular exercise or training. Unlike general relaxation or Swedish massage, which focuses primarily on stress relief and overall well-being, sports massage targets the specific muscles, tendons, and soft tissues most involved in athletic activities. Release stubborn muscle tension and pay extra attention to trigger points (knots), myofascial restrictions, and overuse symptoms. May include neuromuscular facilitations and active or myotonic muscle releases. It uses targeted techniques (such active releases, neuromuscular fascilitations, deep massage, stretching, compression, and trigger point work) to address the demands of training, competition, and recovery.
It can be applied at different times:
Pre-event (to prepare muscles, improve flexibility, and reduce injury risk). Post-event (to aid recovery and reduce soreness). Maintenance (between sessions for ongoing conditioning and injury prevention). Rehabilitative (to support healing from strains, overuse injuries, or imbalances).
Sports massage is widely used and supported for the following benefits:
Improved recovery and reduced muscle soreness — It helps decrease delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after intense exercise, clears metabolic waste (like lactic acid buildup faster in some views), and promotes faster tissue repair through better circulation. Many athletes report feeling less stiff the next day.
Enhanced flexibility and range of motion — Regular sessions can increase muscle and joint mobility, which supports better movement patterns and indirectly aids performance.
Injury prevention — By relieving muscle tension, improving muscle balance/firing patterns, and addressing tight or overused areas, it may lower the risk of strains, sprains, or overuse issues.
Faster overall recovery — It supports blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and the body’s natural repair processes, helping athletes return to training sooner after hard sessions or events.
Reduced muscle tension and pain relief — It eases tightness, knots, and hypertonicity, providing relief from exercise-related discomfort and supporting rehabilitation from minor injuries.
Psychological benefits — Many experience reduced stress/anxiety, better mood, lower perceived fatigue, and improved sense of readiness or relaxation—valuable for mental preparation in sports.
